Nationwide journey of the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Replica Wall is set to commence in Baldwin Park this Thursday, marking the beginning of an eagerly anticipated event.
The journey of “The Wall That Heals” across the San Gabriel Valley commenced on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., passing through Covina, Irwindale, and various parts of Los Angeles County before reaching Baldwin Park.
A procession of motorcyclists and patriotic vehicles, including Freedom Riders and local public safety personnel, escorted the Wall on its course.
For the first time in Baldwin Park’s history, “The Wall That Heals,” a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial accompanied by a mobile Education Center, will make its inaugural stop on its nationwide journey across the continental United States from March 14, 2023, to March 17, 2023.
Years of preparation have gone into bringing “The Wall That Heals,” to Baldwin Park.
Each year, over 100 cities across the United States vie for the opportunity to host the Wall, providing a platform to honor the more than three million Americans who served in the United States Armed Forces Vietnam War.
Named in remembrance of the 58,281 men and women who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam, the Wall will be officially welcomed by Baldwin Park on Thursday, March 14, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Morgan Park’s Cesar E. Chavez Amphitheater in the 4100 Block of Baldwin Park Boulevard.
Throughout its stay in Baldwin Park, the Wall will be accessible 24/7 and free of charge to all visitors until its departure on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., when it will move to El Cajon, California.
Baldwin Park High School Band will perform Taps at sunset that evening, as well as every evening that The Wall is in Baldwin Park.
“Baldwin Park is incredibly honored to serve as the very first host site for The Wall That Heals in the continental U.S.,” said Baldwin Park Mayor Emmanuel J. Estrada. “Our City is a big believer in hosting events that nurture community. This is one of the most special events we have ever hosted, bringing people together from all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. The Wall will give us all a truly unique experience in honoring our local heroes who fought in Vietnam, to whom we are forever indebted.”
Traveling in a 53-foot trailer that transforms into a mobile teaching center, the Wall features displays about the Vietnam War and serves as a poignant reminder of a controversial period in American history.
Managed by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), the organization responsible for the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., the Wall That Heals initiative aims to honor and educate visitors about the sacrifices made during the Vietnam War.
“The Wall That Heals,” is the only traveling exhibit linked with The Wall in Washington, D.C., and it features the biggest replica of the Wall that traverses the country.
“The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile exhibit to Baldwin Park to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to experience The Wall,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of VVMF. “Hosting The Wall That Heals provides an opportunity to honor and remember all those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and educate visitors on the continuing impact of the Vietnam War on America.”
Parking will be available throughout Morgan Park and neighboring public lots, with golf carts provided to assist those in need of transportation to the exhibit.
