MLB player and alumni from Baldwin Park High School, Bernardo Flores is trying to help Baldwin Park’s baseball program. Mr. Flores is the youngest of two kids, he started playing baseball at the age of three. He became fascinated with baseball after watching a game on TV and learning about its colorful history. He played baseball at Eastside little league and then at pleasant view, known as “Lucky” or Baldwin pony league.
It was there where he met his best friends/brothers ( Jonatan Huerta, Carlos Hernandez, Daniel Escobedo) Playing for the Baldwin Park roadrunners baseball team. From then on they all went to Baldwin Park high school where he meets the man that had an extraordinary impact on his life. Jake Barendregt a Baldwin Park High School teacher/coach/alum from 1993. Mr. Barendregt had experience playing beyond high school and at Division 1 Florida International University as well as professional baseball in the Frontier League.
Mr. Flores went to the University of Southern California for three years after high school where he majored in history with a minor in sports media studies. He pitched three years for the Trojans from 2014 to 2016 and drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB First-year players draft. His mentality along with his work ethic and discipline is how he received his baseball scholarship at the University of Southern California.
Mr. Flores, Spent four years in the minor leagues with the White Sox beginning from Rookie ball all the way up to AA. Developing well in the Minors, and allowing him to win the best left-handed pitcher in the organization, an all-star selection in 2018 (Class A Advanced), and a Minor League Gold Glove Award.
On September 3, 2020, he made his Major League debut vs Kansas City Royals. He told Baldwin Park News “No better feeling of putting on a major league uniform for the first time and having these guys you looked up to be your teammates”. He also told Baldwin Park News, the highlight was striking out the first major league hitter to end the inning. Definitely an experience he will never forget however as the saying goes we’re “not done yet”. There is still more he would like to accomplish and more milestones he would like to chase.
During the off-season, he trains in Baldwin Park with Jake Barendregt and his brothers till this very day. To help his coach and the baseball program at BPHS and work as a part-time employee of the Baldwin Park Unified School District.
He told Baldwin Park News everything that has happened is not possible without the love and support of his family especially his mother, father, and sister. They’ve all taught him life lessons about discipline and hard work.
When he played as a student, at Baldwin Park High School the coach recognized his raw ability creating a long-term developmental plan and work on harnessing potential. That he Implanted the mindset that he can be anything he wants to be but how hard was he willing to work for it. How bad did he want to accomplish his goals and once he reached it what else was next? That is where his saying “Not Done Yet” came from. The shirts that Mr.Flores is trying to fundraise is to help the program and students from Baldwin Park High School.

Flores fue a la Universidad del Sur de California durante tres años después de la escuela secundaria, donde se especializó en historia con un menor en estudios de medios deportivos. El 3 de septiembre de 2020, hizo su debut en las Grandes Ligas contra los Reales de Kansas City. Le dijo a Baldwin Park News “No hay mejor sensación de ponerse un uniforme de Grandes Ligas por primera vez y tener a estos tipos que buscaron para ser sus compañeros de equipo”. También le dijo a Baldwin Park News, lo más destacado fue ponchar al primer bateador de grandes ligas en terminar la entrada. Definitivamente una experiencia que nunca olvidará, sin embargo, como dice el refrán, “aún no hemos terminado”. Todavía hay más que le gustaría lograr y más hitos que le gustaría perseguir.
Durante la temporada baja, entrena en Baldwin Park con Jake Barendregt y sus hermanos hasta el día de hoy. Para ayudar a su entrenador y el programa de béisbol en BPHS y trabajar como empleado a tiempo parcial del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Baldwin Park.
Cuando jugó como estudiante, en Baldwin Park High School, el entrenador reconoció su habilidad cruda creando un plan de desarrollo a largo plazo y trabajando para aprovechar el potencial. Que implanta la mentalidad de que puede ser cualquier cosa que quiera ser, pero lo difícil que estaba dispuesto a trabajar para ello. ¿Qué tan malo quería lograr sus objetivos y una vez que lo alcanzó, qué más estaba después? De ahí vino su dicho “Aún no hecho”. Flores está tratando de recaudar fondos es ayudar al programa y a los estudiantes de Baldwin Park High School.
