On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at approximately 9:42 pm, officers from the Baldwin Park Police Department responded to a home in the 3400 block of Mangum Street regarding an assault involving a male suspect attacking an individual with a stick.
Upon arriving, officers located at least three victims outside the residence. One of the victims, a female in her 70s, was unresponsive in the yard, the victim had severe injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two additional victims, a man, and woman were transported to a local hospital where they were treated and released. Their injuries were reported to be moderate injuries.
The officers were directed to the suspect who lives in a rear house on the property. The suspect, a Hispanic man identified as Giovanni Rivera Mims, a 27-year-old barricaded himself inside the home.
A tactical operation went underway conducted by the Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau and Crisis negotiators.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau introduced tear gas into the home prior to entering the residence with a K9 Unit. The suspect identified as Giovanni Rivera Mims was then taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau.
He was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. Upon being cleared from the hospital, he was booked at the Baldwin Park Police Department for Murder.
As of Thursday afternoon, the victim had not been identified.
