Pursuit involving a box truck traveling the wrong way on multiple freeways came to an end in Baldwin Park early Monday morning.
California Highway Patrol officers intercepted the truck at approximately 1:14 a.m. after spotting it moving against traffic, creating a serious hazard for other drivers.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the pursuit spanned several major freeways in the region.
As the chase unfolded, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau provided aerial support along the 60 Freeway near Azusa Avenue.
Its pursuit initially stretched from the 60 Freeway at Azusa Avenue in Hacienda Heights to the 60 Freeway at San Gabriel Boulevard in Rosemead.
From there, the driver repeatedly switched freeways, returning to the 60 Freeway, merging onto the 57 Freeway in Walnut, before returning to the 60 Freeway and then onto the 71 Freeway in Pomona.
The truck’s dangerous journey continued as it briefly returned to the 60 Freeway, then the 57 Freeway, and then joined the 10 Freeway near Pomona.
Its suspect exited briefly in Covina, rejoined the freeway near Cities Avenue, and continued through Monterey Park and then stayed on the 10 Freeway into Baldwin Park.
The pursuit lasted approximately one hour and thirty-eight minutes, and at approximately 2:52 a.m., the truck exited at Frazier Street the wrong way and came to a stop at a dead-end on Frazier Street and Parkwood Place in Baldwin Park.
Following the dead-end stop, the driver then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers near Frazier Street and Garvey Avenue, the California Highway Patrol told Baldwin Park News.
One firearm was recovered next to the driver’s seat inside the box truck. No other passengers were reported, and no injuries to other motorists were immediately reported.
Its suspect was taken into custody at the scene by the California Highway Patrol.
