High School Senior Student from Sierra Vista High School Kiara Aparicio was recognized as the high school first-place award winner for the National Association for Bilingual Education’s (NABE) 2022 National Essay Writing Contest, earning her a $500 reward, a NABE certificate, and highly-coveted NABE Shining Star Trophy.
Aparicio presented her award-winning essay to more than 1,000 attendees on February 9, 2022, during the annual NABE 2022 Conference and Awards Ceremony, held from February 7, 2022, to February 10, 2022, in New York. She received a standing ovation from the audience.
In her essay, Aparicio discusses the struggles and obstacles she has overcome as an immigrant and how she is determined to succeed for herself and her family.
Aparicio was joined by her mom, her Sierra Vista High School Teacher and mentor Charlene Fried, and Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement Dr. Angela Salazar.
Baldwin Park’s Mayor Emmanuel J. Estrada also traveled to attend the conference and support Aparicio as she received her recognition.
“Baldwin Park Unified is exceptionally proud of Kiara Aparicio for all of her hard work and dedication to her education,” Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza said. “Kiara represented the entire Baldwin Park community on a national stage with so much enthusiasm and pride, and we cannot wait to see where her talents take her.”
Aparicio moved to the United States in 2019 and she has since not only learned English but has continued to develop her academic Spanish. Aparicio plans to become a medical doctor, and she hopes to serve the bilingual community of Baldwin Park.
Aparicio will begin her post-secondary education at Río Hondo College.
NABE is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to representing and advocating for bilingual and multilingual students and bilingual and dual-language educators.

Estudiante de Último año de Secundaria de Sierra Vista High School, Kiara Aparicio fue reconocida como la ganadora del primer premio de secundaria para el Concurso Nacional de Redacción de Ensayos de la Asociación Nacional para la Educación Bilingüe 2022, lo que le valió una recompensa de $500, un certificado NABE y el muy codiciado Trofeo NABE Shining Star.
Aparicio presentó su ensayo galardonado a más de 1,000 asistentes el 9 de febrero de 2022, durante la Conferencia anual y Ceremonia de Premios NABE 2022, celebrada del 7 de febrero de 2022 al 10 de febrero de 2022 en Nueva York. Recibió una ovación de pie de la audiencia.

Aparicio estuvo acompañado por su madre, su Maestra de Secundaria Sierra Vista y mentora Charlene Fried, y la Superintendente Asistente de Logros Estudiantiles, la Dra. Angela Salazar.
El alcalde de Baldwin Park, Emmanuel J. Estrada, también viajó para asistir a la conferencia y apoyar a Aparicio mientras recibía su reconocimiento.

Aparicio se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 2019 y desde entonces no solo ha aprendido inglés, sino que ha seguido desarrollando su español académico. Aparicio planea convertirse en médico, y espera servir a la comunidad bilingüe de Baldwin Park.
Aparicio comenzará su educación postsecundaria en Rio Hondo College.
