Sierra Vista High School junior Jinhui Liu was recognized as a first-place winner in the high school division of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) student essay contest.
Liu crafted a passionate essay about how being a bilingual student has helped him connect with others and be a source of good while he serves those around him. The honor comes along with a $500 scholarship, trophy, and certificate.
Liu presented his essay in English and Mandarin at the annual NABE conference in Portland Oregon, held on February 24, 2023, joined by his mother and Sierra Vista High School teacher Charlene Fried. This was the third year in a row that Fried has taught and mentored a NABE essay winner.
“First, I want to thank my mom for helping me get to America, and my aunt for her support and encouragement,” Liu said. “I want to thank everyone in BPUSD, and especially everyone at Sierra Vista High School for their support. I want to thank Charlene Fried because she encouraged me to do this and without her support, I would not have submitted this essay. I also want to thank my AP computer science principles teacher, Jimmy Salcedo, because he inspired my future studies in computers.”
Fried first started working with Liu during his freshman year, when school was online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Liu, who immigrated to the United States during seventh grade, reclassified this year into regular English classes and currently holds a 4.0 GPA.
“He is a giver, he wants to help others more than himself and he is always doing something for someone else,” Fried said. “In our English Language Development class, when we were online, he would always help other students. In-person, he continues to help students who are new arrivals to the U.S.”

Liu serves as president of the school’s IDEAS club and is a member of the National Honor Society and the SVHS Leo Club. After high school, Liu said he plans to study computer science or programming at a university.
During the NABE conference, Fried presented a workshop and Liu assisted her with all her technology needs. Liu, whose favorite course this year is AP computer science, said he was happy to help Fried during her presentation.
In his essay, Liu describes feeling disconnected from his mom and his new home in the United States because of language barriers. He writes that he learned about American history and immigration in middle school, but was taken aback by the lack of acceptance for people like his mom, who work so hard to achieve the American dream.
However, through becoming a bilingual learner and helping serve as a translator for his mom, Liu said he increased his understanding of his mom’s experiences and felt gratitude to her for the sacrifices that she made to ensure he received an education in a supportive environment.
In his essay, Liu writes: “By becoming bilingual and culturally aware, I am preparing myself for my future, a future that will enable me to love and serve all people.”
When he first arrived in Southern California, Liu said another student helped him navigate the new surroundings, culture, and language and his long-term goal is to continue giving back to others in the same kind and generous way.

Jinhui Liu, estudiante de tercer año de Sierra Vista High School, fue reconocido como ganador del primer lugar en la división de escuelas secundarias del concurso de ensayos para estudiantes de la Asociación Nacional para la Educación Bilingüe (NABE).
Liu elaboró un ensayo apasionado sobre cómo ser un estudiante bilingüe lo ha ayudado a conectarse con los demás y a ser una fuente de bien mientras sirve a quienes lo rodean. El honor viene junto con una beca de $500, trofeo y certificado.
Liu presentó su ensayo en inglés y mandarín en la conferencia anual de NABE en Portland, Oregón, celebrada el 24 de febrero de 2023, junto con su madre y la maestra de secundaria de Sierra Vista, Charlene Fried. Este fue el tercer año consecutivo en que Fried ha enseñado y asesorado a un ganador de ensayo de NABE.
“Primero, quiero agradecer a mi madre por ayudarme a llegar a Estados Unidos, y a mi tía por su apoyo y aliento”, dijo Liu. “Quiero agradecer a todos en BPUSD, y especialmente a todos en Sierra Vista High School por su apoyo. Quiero agradecer a Charlene Fried porque me animó a hacer esto y sin su apoyo, no habría presentado este ensayo. También quiero agradecer a mi maestro de principios de ciencias de la computación de AP, Jimmy Salcedo, porque inspiró mis futuros estudios en computadoras.”
Fried comenzó a trabajar con Liu durante su primer año, cuando la escuela estaba en línea debido a la pandemia de COVID-19. Liu, quien emigró a los Estados Unidos durante el séptimo grado, se reclasificó este año en clases regulares de inglés y actualmente tiene un GPA de 4.0.

Liu se desempeña como presidente del club de IDEAS de la escuela y es miembro de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor y del Club Leo de SVHS. Después de la secundaria, Liu dijo que planea estudiar ciencias de la computación o programación en una universidad.
Durante la conferencia de NABE, Fried presentó un taller y Liu la ayudó con todas sus necesidades tecnológicas. Liu, cuyo curso favorito de este año es AP computer science, dijo que estaba feliz de ayudar a Fried durante su presentación.
En su ensayo, Liu describe sentirse desconectado de su madre y de su nuevo hogar en los Estados Unidos debido a las barreras del idioma. Escribe que aprendió sobre la historia estadounidense y la inmigración en la escuela secundaria, pero se sorprendió por la falta de aceptación de personas como su madre, que trabajan tan duro para lograr el sueño americano.

En su ensayo, Liu escribe : “Al convertirme en bilingüe y culturalmente consciente, me estoy preparando para mi futuro, un futuro que me permitirá amar y servir a todas las personas.”
Cuando llegó por primera vez al sur de California, Liu dijo que otro estudiante lo ayudó a navegar por el nuevo entorno, la cultura y el idioma, y su objetivo a largo plazo es continuar retribuyendo a los demás de la misma manera amable y generosa.
