Rows of tables filled the cafeteria at the Elwin Professional Development Center as more than 80 Baldwin Park Unified School District Students faced off in the District’s first-ever Chess Tournament on November 8, 2023.
Students shook hands with their opponents before diving into their chess game, competing in four rounds total and against a new partner each time.
Parents and families silently watched while chess instructors from Chess Masters roamed the room to help answer any questions, settle any debates, and tally scores at the end of each round.
Chess Masters is a program funded through Expanded Learning Opportunities Programs (ELOP), that teaches students the fundamentals of the game, as well as provides classes for intermediate and advanced pupils.
Over the last 10 weeks, Think Together students in transitional kindergarten through eighth grade studied and practiced the strategies of chess and prepared to show off their knowledge during the culminating tournament.
Chess Masters was also offered as a pilot program at Geddes Elementary School and Tracy Elementary School for students not enrolled in after-school care, with more than 80 students participating every week.
“This is a great space where our students can enjoy themselves, try something new and dedicate time to learn new skills,” District Coordinator of Support Services Dr. Maria Alonso said. “We are so grateful to the instructors of Chess Masters and Think Together for helping make this event a great time for everyone.”
At the conclusion of the four rounds, Chess Masters instructors tallied up total scores while Think Together Teachers and Baldwin Park Unified School District administrators awarded medals and certificates to all competitors.
Trophies were given to the top scorers in the following grade levels: first/second; third/fourth; fifth/sixth; and seventh/eighth.
Tournament trophies went to Olive Middle School eighth-grader Daniel Zhang, Sierra Vista Middle School sixth-grader Qinyan Wang, Central Elementary School fourth-grader Matthew Godinez Martinez, and Geddes Elementary School second-grader Alexander Xavier Sandoval.
“I play chess every day, and when I heard about Chess Masters, I knew I wanted to sign up,” Zhang said. “Today was really fun.”

Los estudiantes estrecharon la mano de sus oponentes antes de sumergirse en su partida de ajedrez, compitiendo en cuatro rondas en total y contra un nuevo compañero cada vez.
Los padres y las familias observaron en silencio mientras los instructores de ajedrez de los Maestros de Ajedrez deambulaban por la sala para ayudar a responder cualquier pregunta, resolver cualquier debate y contar las puntuaciones al final de cada ronda.
Chess Masters es un programa financiado a través de Expanded Learning Opportunities Programs (ELOP), que enseña a los estudiantes los fundamentos del juego, además de brindar clases para alumnos intermedios y avanzados.

“Este es un gran espacio donde nuestros estudiantes pueden divertirse, probar algo nuevo y dedicar tiempo a aprender nuevas habilidades”, dijo la Dra. María Alonso, Coordinadora de Servicios de Apoyo del Distrito. “Estamos muy agradecidos con los instructores de Chess Masters y Think Together por ayudar a que este evento sea un gran momento para todos.”
Al concluir las cuatro rondas, los instructores de Maestros de Ajedrez anotaron los puntajes totales, mientras que los Maestros de Think Together y los administradores del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Baldwin Park otorgaron medallas y certificados a todos los competidores.
Se entregaron trofeos a los mejores anotadores en los siguientes niveles de grado: primero/ segundo; tercero / cuarto; quinto / sexto; y séptimo / octavo.
Los trofeos del torneo fueron para Daniel Zhang, de octavo grado de Olive Middle School, Qinyan Wang, de sexto grado de Sierra Vista Middle School, Matthew Godínez Martínez, de cuarto grado de Central Elementary School, y Alexander Xavier Sandoval, de segundo grado de Geddes Elementary School.
“Juego ajedrez todos los días, y cuando escuché hablar de Maestros de Ajedrez, supe que quería inscribirme”, dijo Zhang. “Hoy fue muy divertido.”
