Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has identified the victim who was killed in a third-alarm apartment complex fire in Baldwin Park on July 19, 2026.
Department of Medical Examiner identified the victim on Monday, just over three weeks after the deadly fire, after she had remained unidentified, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner told Baldwin Park News.
She was identified as 71-year-old Eva Varro-Oriold, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Her cause was listed as deferred following an investigation conducted by Medical Examiner Investigator Jasmine Sebro and a Deputy Medical Examiner.
A “deferred” cause, is a designation used when the cause cannot be immediately determined and additional investigation, testing, or information is needed before a final determination can be made by the Department of Medical Examiner.
Determining the cause could take several months, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Neighbors, including residents Darlene and her husband, Jesse, attempted to help Eva Varro-Oriold escape safely from the apartment where the fire is believed to have started that night.
Tragically, the neighbors were unable to open the apartment door before firefighters arrived, leaving Eva Varro-Oriold trapped inside.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Darlene and Jesse rebuild their lives following the devastating apartment complex fire.
On July 19, 2026, at approximately 8:07 p.m., officers with the Baldwin Park Police Department and firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to reports of a residential structure fire near the intersection of Ramona Boulevard and Barnes Avenue.
Firefighters arrived approximately six minutes after the initial 9-1-1 call, at approximately 8:13 p.m., and encountered heavy smoke and intense flames coming from portions of the multi-unit apartment complex.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department upgraded the incident to a working residential structure fire as crews worked to contain the rapidly growing blaze, the department told Baldwin Park News.
As flames rapidly spread throughout the complex, the incident was upgraded to a second-alarm fire at approximately 8:25 p.m., bringing additional firefighters, equipment, and specialized resources from across the region.
At approximately 9:19 p.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department upgraded the incident to a third-alarm residential structure fire as crews battled the growing blaze, bringing additional firefighters, equipment, and resources to the scene.
Firefighters battled the intense blaze for more than two hours before successfully stopping its forward progress and preventing the fire from spreading further.
At approximately 10:34 p.m., firefighters brought the blaze under control, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department declared the fire knocked down, the department told Baldwin Park News.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region responded to assist displaced residents, providing emergency aid, temporary shelter assistance, and other immediate support.
Its cause of the fire remains under investigation to determine what sparked the deadly blaze.
July’s deadly blaze marked Baldwin Park’s first fatal structure fire in nearly four years, following a 2022 residential fire that killed two women in the 14700 block of Clark Street.
