Her words, filled with somber reflection and gratitude, set the tone for the evening as she spoke of Lopez’s exceptional dedication to every student, highlighting how his leadership extended far beyond the walls of the school.
As the ceremony unfolded, the voices of those who had known Lopez echoed throughout the stadium.
Baldwin Park High School administrators, including Kenneth Miralles, Ana Richardson, Alyflor Navalta, and Silvia Peregrina, shared stories of how Lopez had not only been a principal but also a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of strength to all who crossed his path.
Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza opened the program with an emotional tribute, reflecting on the lasting impact Lopez had on the district.
“Mr. Lopez was more than just a leader,” Dr. Mendoza shared. “He was a friend, a mentor, and a constant source of support for so many of us.”

“Personally I will miss our conversation about the hundreds of suits, he had and where he would get them in downtown L.A.” Dr. Mendoza said, his voice filled with emotion.

Sierra Vista High School Sandra Duckering, teacher and coach, and principal Vince Pratt also shared their memories of Lopez.
Christian Luna, a custodian at Jones Middle School and a former student, recalled the encouragement Lopez had shown him throughout his life.
One of the most touching moments of the evening came when Sergio Barragan, a counselor at Jones Middle School, shared his first interaction with Lopez.
“I was returning to work after 12 weeks of sick leave, worried about working with a new principal who might scrutinize my teaching and classroom management,” Barragan recalled. “Instead, I always remember Mr. Lopez with gratitude and respect for the kindness and support he showed me.” Barragan added, “He helped me grow into a better, stronger, and healthier teacher.”
Johanna Lopez, counselor at Olive Middle School, and Irene Ramirez, an Olive Middle School teacher, shared their memories of how Lopez inspired students to strive for greatness.
Irene Ramirez reflected, “There are so many things that can be said about Mr. Lopez, but what I hope everyone walks away with tonight is how he made you feel.”
Saralee Loya, Baldwin Park High School’s secretary, and Joseph Laski, a teacher and coach, also spoke about Lopez’s profound influence.
Joseph Laski, a teacher and coach at Baldwin Park High School, described Lopez’s impact on students: “Mr. Lopez had a lasting, positive impact on every life here today, never asking for any praise. Never asked for anything in return. Or notoriety was only for BPHS. He empowered our students. To expand their interests, try new things. And to reach their full potential.”
Laski added, “He always showed up. Football games in the snow. He showed up, showed up. Adding “Baseball games, softball games across, Southern California. He showed up.”
For many students, Lopez was not just a principal; he was a mentor who believed in their potential.
“Mr. Lopez was always a man of his word. He welcomed every student with open arms, and because of him, I’ve become the leader I am today,” one student shared.
Another student recalled how Lopez’s support shaped their leadership.
“I came to appreciate Mr. Lopez’s dedication as a principal. One specific aspect of Mr. Lopez that l’ll never forget is the fact that he always made me feel important as a student and an individual.” she said. “And even though he probably had a hundred other things to do or a hundred other people to talk to You would still make time to meet with me and care about what I had to say.”
She continued saying, “When my friends and I started a model United Nations Club to hopefully encourage more academic participation at the school Mr. Lopez never doubted that potential of the club or the students at the school. He never deemed us demotivated or never doubted what we could do as students.
Adding, “Mr. Lopez and in the next hour, he had called me to his office and assured me that he would pay for all of our conferences and supported us entirely. Altho those thousands of dollars will never go under appreciated. It’s not just the money he gave that’s struck out to me. It was the fact that he believed in students at the school to create change and make positive contributions.”
Jackie White, a former staff member, read a poem that captured the essence of Lopez’s legacy—his unwavering love for his students and the Baldwin Park community.
Veronica Lopez, Eric’s widow, bravely addressed the crowd, holding back tears as she shared personal reflections on her late husband.
“What I can say. Eric to me. Was an amazing partner. Such a wonderful friend. And he was a tremendous father.”
Veronica Lopez said, “ He was so proud of all of his kids, and by that, I made his students. And faculty and he just loved loved his career.”
She continued, “As painful as this has been, it brings me comfort knowing he lived his legacy.”
Veronica remembered how Eric loved being a father to their daughters, Vienna and Viviana, sharing lighthearted moments like allowing them to paint his nails and do his hair.
Veronica reflected on her grief, adding, “In my heart, I keep holding onto the hope that this is all a mistake and that he’ll pick up the phone and call. It’s so painful to know that’s not a reality.”
Gary Lopez Jr., Eric’s nephew, also spoke, honoring his uncle’s commitment to family, education, and service.
As a final tribute, Baldwin Park Unified School District presented the Lopez family with a thank-you gift—an arrangement of orchids from the four schools where Eric had taught. Each orchid symbolized Lopez’s lasting impact at each institution, a reminder of the legacy he left behind.

Days after, Outside the school, a memorial took shape as heartfelt messages of love and gratitude filled the entrance.
A large poster carried the words, “You will always be in our hearts. Thank you for being a truly inspirational principal,” while blue hearts adorned the area with tributes such as “Fly High,” “Always a Brave,” and “I will miss you.”
Baldwin Park High school’s marquee stood as a permanent tribute, displaying: “In loving memory of Principal Eric D. Lopez – A dedicated leader, mentor, and friend. Your legacy will inspire us forever.”
Lopez’s tragic passing resulted from a multi-vehicle collision on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Pepper Avenue in the City of Colton, within San Bernardino County, at approximately 6:11 p.m.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) log reported that a vehicle traveling in the westbound lanes crossed the center divider into oncoming traffic, setting off a chain reaction involving at least four vehicles.
A white pickup truck was allegedly driving erratically just before the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
SIGALERT was issued by CHP at approximately 6:33 p.m., closing all eastbound lanes while investigators and crews worked at the scene.
Its collision claimed the lives of two individuals, including Lopez.
San Bernardino County Coroner confirmed Lopez’s identity along with 40-year-old Faith C. Manigos of Redlands as the victims.
Video footage captured by OnScene.TV, an independent Southern California news agency, showed the harrowing aftermath of the crash and underscored the severity of the incident.
Lopez’s 31-year career in education left an enduring legacy. He earned a reputation as a compassionate leader, he dedicated his life to the academic and personal growth of his students.
Starting his career as a social studies teacher in the El Monte Union High School District, Lopez later advanced to become director of student activities.
In 2006, he joined Baldwin Park Unified School District as an assistant principal at Sierra Vista High School.
Over the years, he assumed greater leadership roles, serving as principal at Jones Middle School and Olive Middle School before taking the helm at Baldwin Park High School in 2021.
Under his guidance, Baldwin Park High School flourished, earning a reputation for academic and community excellence.
Lopez built meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families, always going the extra mile to support initiatives that benefited the school.
A graduate of El Monte High School, Lopez earned his bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Cruz and completed his administrative credential at National University in San Diego.
Outside his professional role, Lopez was actively engaged in the community.
