Margaret Heath Elementary School students collected pennies and coin donations from their families and neighbors over the last year to fund a $500 scholarship for a Baldwin Park Unified School District graduate, as part of a long-standing tradition to celebrate the school’s namesake on October 7, 2022.
During this year’s celebration, Baldwin Park High School Class of 2022 graduate Linah Robles was awarded the Margaret Heath Scholarship to help fund her educational pursuits at Mt. San Antonio College. Robles is studying psychology at Mt. SAC with the goal of becoming a child psychologist.
Continuing the tradition that began in 1951, the school community has honored Margaret Heath by fundraising for the scholarship that is granted every year to a Heath alumnus to help pay for their post-secondary education. Heath dedicated her life to Baldwin Park and served as a longtime educator, administrator, and volunteer for the Baldwin Park Unified School District.
During the ceremony, student council members told the story of Heath, who was born in 1860 and became principal of Central Elementary in 1913. After Heath retired, the Baldwin Park Unified School District dedicated a new elementary school in her honor and Margaret Heath Elementary School opened its doors in 1927.
Heath died in 1952, and since then families and employees have continued bringing bouquets of flowers to place by her portrait and bags of pennies, wrapped in school colors, to add to the red wagon to fund the scholarship.
“I remember sitting in the audience listening to this speech from past Heath Scholarship recipients,” Robles said. “I would love to thank the teachers and staff of Margaret Heath Elementary for being such positive and inspiring role models, not only for me but for generations to come. Preparing me for the secondary level was their responsibility and I’m so thankful for that.”
Robles attended Margaret Heath Elementary before being promoted to Olive Middle School, and later to Baldwin Park High School. She is a graduate of the Baldwin Park Unified Dual Language Program.
“Margaret Heath Day is a significant Baldwin Park Unified event, when we honor the trailblazers of our District’s past and celebrate our future leaders,” Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza said. “We are so thankful to our families and employees for continuing this beloved tradition.”

Los estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Margaret Heath recolectaron centavos y donaciones de monedas de sus familias y vecinos durante el año pasado para financiar una beca de $500 para un graduado del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Baldwin Park, como parte de una tradición de larga data de celebrar el homónimo de la escuela el 7 de octubre de 2022.
Durante la celebración de este año, la graduada de la clase 2022 de Baldwin Park High School, Linah Robles, recibió la Beca Margaret Heath para ayudar a financiar sus actividades educativas en Mt. Colegio de San Antonio. Robles está estudiando psicología en Mt. SAC con el objetivo de convertirse en psicólogo infantil.
Continuando con la tradición que comenzó en 1951, la comunidad escolar ha honrado a Margaret Heath recaudando fondos para la beca que se otorga cada año a un ex alumno de Heath para ayudar a pagar su educación postsecundaria. Heath dedicó su vida a Baldwin Park y se desempeñó como educadora, administradora y voluntaria durante mucho tiempo para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Baldwin Park.
Durante la ceremonia, los miembros del consejo estudiantil contaron la historia de Heath, quien nació en 1860 y se convirtió en director de la Primaria Central en 1913. Después de que Heath se retiró, el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Baldwin Park dedicó una nueva escuela primaria en su honor y la Escuela Primaria Margaret Heath abrió sus puertas en 1927.
Heath murió en 1952, y desde entonces las familias y los empleados han seguido trayendo ramos de flores para colocar junto a su retrato y bolsas de centavos, envueltas en colores escolares, para agregar al carro rojo para financiar la beca.
“Recuerdo estar sentado en la audiencia escuchando este discurso de anteriores beneficiarios de Becas Heath”, dijo Robles. “Me encantaría agradecer a los maestros y al personal de la Primaria Margaret Heath por ser modelos a seguir tan positivos e inspiradores, no solo para mí sino para las generaciones venideras. Prepararme para el nivel secundario fue su responsabilidad y estoy muy agradecida por eso.”
Robles asistió a la primaria Margaret Heath antes de ser promovida a Olive Middle School, y más tarde a Baldwin Park High School. Se graduó del Programa Unificado de Dos Idiomas de Baldwin Park.
“El Día de Margaret Heath es un evento significativo del Distrito Unificado de Baldwin Park, cuando honramos a los pioneros del pasado de nuestro Distrito y celebramos a nuestros futuros líderes”, dijo el superintendente del Distrito Unificado de Baldwin Park, Dr. Froilan N.
