Remains discovered in Thermal 31 years ago were identified as those of a Baldwin Park woman following a Cold Case Homicide, according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
Through the use of forensic genealogy, the Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team – which was led by the DA’s Bureau of Investigation – announced on August 23, 2022, that they had identified a woman whose remains were found in Thermal 31 years ago.
Human remains were discovered on January 22, 1991, in Thermal, near Avenue 62 and Madison Street, in a wash area at the base of a hill. There were just bones discovered, and they seemed to have been in the desert for a very long period.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s subsequent investigation found no clues, and the case—which was thought to involve a suspicious death—became unsolved.
A forensic genetic genealogy inquiry was launched earlier this year, and the bones were subsequently provisionally identified as those of Kathryn Coffey, of the City of Baldwin Park who was born on January 8, 1954.
Investigators from the Cold Case Homicide Team visited Kathryn’s sister in June 2022 and collected DNA for future examination.
The California Department of Justice lab determined that the remains belonged to Kathryn Coffey, on August 8, 2022, and her family was informed of the correct identification.
Her family was told that Kathryn was last seen in the Indio region between 1989 and 1990. They also revealed to the investigators that she had an English literature degree from Scripps College in the middle of the 1970s and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
