“In a matter of minutes, everything they worked so hard for was taken away, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.” are the words written on a GoFundMe campaign launched to help a Baldwin Park couple rebuild their lives after a devastating apartment complex fire that claimed one person’s life earlier this month.
On July 19, 2026, officers with the Baldwin Park Police Department and firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded at approximately 8:07 p.m. to reports of a residential structure fire near the intersection of Ramona Boulevard and Barnes Avenue.
Firefighters arrived at the scene within six minutes of the initial 9-1-1 call, to find heavy smoke and intense flames tearing through portions of the multi-unit apartment complex.
As crews battled the rapidly growing blaze, the fire was upgraded to a working residential structure fire before escalating to both a second-alarm and third-alarm response, bringing additional firefighters, specialized equipment, and emergency resources from across Los Angeles County.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.
As of Wednesday, the victim had not been publicly identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner told Baldwin Park News that the victim’s identity remains pending formal identification and notification of the legal next of kin.
Among those displaced by the fire were Baldwin Park residents Darlene, her husband Jesse, who lost their home along with nearly everything they owned.
For Darlene, the apartment represented far more than a place to live. It was where she launched her business, where she and Jesse began their married life together, and the first home they shared together in their twenties.
For Jesse, the loss was especially personal, as the apartment was the childhood home where he spent his earliest years growing up.
Over the past seven years, the couple poured countless hours of love, time, and hard work into transforming the apartment into a welcoming home for themselves, their two dogs, and everyone who frequently visited.

Its fundraiser was created to help Darlene and Jesse with temporary housing, everyday living expenses, replacing belongings destroyed in the fire, and caring for their two dogs as they begin rebuilding their lives.
As of Wednesday, the campaign called “Help Darlene and Jesse Rebuild After House Fire” had raised more than $5,000 toward its $14,000 goal.
“Any donation helps,” the campaign states, adding that Darlene and Jesse are deeply grateful for the support as they begin rebuilding their lives from the ground up.
In an emotional video shared on social media, Darlene recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the fire and the heartbreaking aftermath.
In the video, Darlene explained that her home was declared a total loss and has since been red-tagged, meaning the property has been deemed unsafe and cannot be occupied.
On the night of the fire, Darlene and Jesse had taken their two dogs for a walk at approximately 7:15 p.m. before returning home roughly 15 minutes later, at approximately 7:30 p.m., and leaving for a movie date.
One of the couple’s dogs remained downstairs while the other stayed upstairs inside the apartment as they left for the evening.
By approximately 7:50 p.m., the couple had arrived at the shopping mall, where they planned to watch a movie.
Shortly after arriving at the shopping mall, Jesse received a smoke alert from the home’s monitoring camera system, notifying him that smoke had been detected in the laundry area.
Realizing the potential danger, the couple immediately called Jesse’s father, who lived only a few minutes away, hoping he could reach the apartment in time to rescue their dogs.
Its couple then checked their home’s puppy camera, only to discover the video feed had turned black and white as thick smoke filled the apartment.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the couple immediately drove back to the apartment complex.
As they entered the property, they noticed thick smoke billowing from the roof.
Darlene recalled that the smoke initially appeared to be coming from a neighboring apartment.
Neighbors, including her husband Jesse, attempted to help the woman living in the apartment complex, the unit where the fire is believed to have started, escape safely.
Tragically, none of the neighbors, including Jesse, were able to open the apartment door before firefighters arrived.
By the time Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived, firefighters pulled the woman from the apartment.
Despite the rescue efforts of neighbors and firefighters, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.
Darlene said her apartment sustained extensive smoke and water damage, while the neighboring unit where the fire is believed to have originated suffered catastrophic fire damage.
She described the neighboring apartment as being completely burned by the fire, with the interior left heavily charred.
Although the couple’s insurance will cover up to six months of temporary housing, Darlene said it does not cover the inside items of their home, leaving them to replace nearly everything they owned.
Now, after losing the home they spent years building together, Darlene and Jesse face the difficult task of starting over, replacing not only their belongings, but also the memories they created there.
