Third and final person involved in a deadly shooting in Baldwin Park in April, whom investigators identified as the gunman, has now been publicly identified as detectives officially ruled the case a double murder-suicide.
Its shooting was initially being investigated as a death investigation while detectives worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
On Friday, April 24, 2026, at approximately 5:07 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting a shooting at Millbury Avenue and Merced Avenue in Baldwin Park.
Officers with the Baldwin Park Police Department, along with personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded to the scene and located three victims, two men and one woman, outside a residence suffering from gunshot wounds.
Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau later determined the shooting stemmed from a family-related dispute.
Detectives indicated the violence may have been connected to inheritance-related issues, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.
Its gunman was identified as 71-year-old Vien Chi Lu by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
His identification was initially withheld pending notification of his next of kin following the shooting.
Vien Chi Lu shot and killed his family members, 56-year-old Bich Lu and her husband, 60-year-old Thaun Chung, before ultimately turning the gun on himself.
Medical Examiner Investigator Edna Morales and a deputy medical examiner determined that Vien Chi Lu’s manner was suicide, caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Both Vien Chi Lu and Bich Lu were pronounced dead at the scene outside a residence, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
Thaun Chung survived the initial shooting and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Bich Lu and her husband, Thaun Chung, were also residents of Baldwin Park, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner told Baldwin Park News.
Following the shooting, family members and loved ones shared additional details about the tragedy through an online fundraiser created in support of the victims’ relatives.
According to the GoFundMe campaign, family members alleged that Vien Chi Lu had made threats toward the family in the months leading up to the shooting, creating what they described as an ongoing atmosphere of fear and concern.
Unbeknownst to the family, he had also located their new home as they were in the process of moving, turning what should have been a new beginning into a devastating end.
Loved ones further alleged in the fundraiser that Vien Chi Lu had been suffering from schizophrenia prior to the shooting occurring.
As of this week, the GoFundMe campaign established for Bich Lu and Thaun Chung has raised more than $94,000, bringing the family closer to its fundraising goal.
