North Park High School reached a major milestone this school year with the launch of its first-ever student sports league, a new initiative already making a measurable impact on campus culture and student success.
Its league was introduced as part of a broader effort to establish stronger daily routines, improve academic performance, and create meaningful opportunities for student engagement beyond the classroom.
Early results have been encouraging, with Staff members reporting improved attendance, healthier habits, and a noticeable increase in overall student participation since the league’s debut.
During the league’s inaugural year, students competed in flag football and softball, laying the foundation for an expanding athletics program.
The fall season concluded with the Vikings’ final softball game, which served as more than just the end of competition; it became a celebration of the league’s impact on campus.
Students, teachers, staff, and community supporters gathered to recognize the growth and enthusiasm generated by the league’s impact.
Adding to the excitement, children from neighboring Geddes Elementary School surprised players by forming a spirited fan section along the sidelines.
Younger students cheered enthusiastically for the Vikings, creating a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere that highlighted the strong sense of community surrounding the initiative.
Its program is led by teacher-coaches Rigo Torres and Kristine Dougherty, who focused on fostering teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility throughout the season.
“We are incredibly proud of our students and how they showed up for themselves and each other,” Rigo Torres said. “We’re excited to keep this momentum going and continue building opportunities that support their growth. This program wouldn’t be possible without the support of our school staff and community.”
Looking ahead, North Park Continuation High School plans to expand the league to include soccer, basketball, and volleyball, further strengthening its commitment to student engagement.
