Baldwin Park Family is asking for community support after a devastating fire damaged the apartment they had called home for more than 35 years, leaving them displaced and facing significant losses.
In the days following the blaze, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Help the Axume Family Rebuild After Home Fire” to help recover from the damage and begin rebuilding their lives.
On January 14, 2026, at approximately 10:12 a.m., the Baldwin Park Police Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at a three-story apartment complex in the 3900 Block of Bresee Avenue.
Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived on scene just four minutes later, at approximately 10:16 a.m., and encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a third-floor unit.
Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters immediately launched an aggressive firefighting operation to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent units.
Its fire was fully extinguished 25 minutes later, at approximately 10:37 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
According to the family’s GoFundMe page, no one was inside the apartment at the time of the fire, and all residents were safely accounted for. No injuries were reported.
Despite the rapid response, the family’s apartment sustained extensive damage, with nearly all of their belongings destroyed within minutes.
As a result of the fire, approximately eight people were displaced, according to the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross responded to assist affected residents with emergency resources.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
