Driver was arrested Saturday morning after he slammed into the Baldwin Park welcome sign, fled the scene, and ultimately became stranded when his heavily damaged vehicle stalled just blocks away.
At approximately 4:16 a.m., a witness called the Baldwin Park Police Department’s Communications Dispatch Center to report a crash involving the welcome sign and a center median near Pacific Avenue and Mayland Avenue.
Its impact caused significant damage to both the vehicle and city property.
Video obtained by Baldwin Park News shows the driver stepping out of the heavily damaged car moments after the crash.
The vehicle’s airbags had deployed, debris was scattered across the roadway, and the windshield appeared covered or obstructed, limiting visibility.
After briefly inspecting the damage, the driver reentered the vehicle and fled on Pacific Avenue.
Its vehicle continued for several blocks until it approached the area of Pacific Avenue and Vineland Avenue, where it pulled into a residential driveway before reversing back onto the roadway.
Shortly after the crash, a witness contacted the Baldwin Park Police Department to report the vehicle’s direction of travel and the extent of the damage.
Moments later, the car reportedly stalled near the intersection of Vineland Avenue and Pacific Avenue, coming to a stop in the roadway due to the severe damage sustained during the collision.
Baldwin Park Police Department officers arrived within minutes and located an adult male in the disabled vehicle.
Officers conducted a field sobriety investigation, during which they determined the driver was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
He was arrested at the scene, the Baldwin Park Police Department told Baldwin Park News.
No injuries were reported, and the crash remained under investigation.
